Profile
About Us
Sunderland Mind is a registered local independent charity that provides confidential, high-quality services for individuals, carers and families experiencing emotional or mental health problems.
We aim to provide advice, information and counselling in a safe, caring, non-judgemental and supportive environment. This is all done with the people of Sunderland and our wider community in mind, allowing us to develop services and training opportunities that truly reflect their needs.
Our service is self-refer, open access and accessible to all. We actively empower individuals with mental health problems to have a voice and take control of their recovery. From this, with our support and guidance, it can lead to an improved quality of life.
Sunderland Mind also encourages individuals to achieve their goals, providing the necessary support available to accomplish this. The involvement of our Service Users in our delivery of this is vital and something we take incredibly seriously. For more information on this topic, visit our Service User / Member Involvement page.
We are also committed to the Quality and Equality of Opportunities and actively influence policy through campaigning and education.
We welcome referrals from community, voluntary, statutory, private sectors and other agencies and work in partnership with other organisations, such as Washington Mind, that share our vision. This allows us to meet the needs of people across the City of Sunderland as well as our wider community.
We are affiliated with Mind, NAMH (National Association for Mental Health) and were awarded Level 1 of Quality Management in Mind. This is a nationally recognised quality award and ensures that we meet high standards throughout the organisation.
Sunderland Mind has also been awarded the Mind Quality Mark (MQM). This is a robust quality assurance framework created by Mind. It sets out the baseline of best practice and legal compliance in all areas of governance and activities. To achieve the MQM, we underwent a rigorous assessment process. This included a thorough appraisal of organisational policies and procedures as well as a visit and interviews with trustees, staff, volunteers and people who use our services. The MQM provides assurance that local Minds, like us, are well-run organisations that meet Mind’s expectations of good practice and, in many cases, excel beyond those expectations. It also assures that we are healthy, ambitious and vital in providing the highest quality support to people experiencing or at risk of developing mental health problems.
