Improving mental health for adults in Burton Upon Trent and the surrounding areas
(18 years and over)
If you’re struggling with your mental health or life issues, then counselling will give you the opportunity to explore issues such as emotional pain, anger, guilt, anxiety or depression with one of our team of trained counsellors.
When you’re experiencing a mental health problem, supportive and reliable information can help.
What is Counselling?
It is often useful to talk to someone who listens and accepts us when we are going through bad times. Sometimes this is easier when they are not a relative or friend.
There are many types of counselling but they all aim to:
-
Give you a safe time and place to talk to someone who won’t judge you.
-
Help you make sense of things and understand yourself better.
-
Help you resolve complicated feelings, or find ways to live with them.
-
Help you recognise unhelpful patterns in the way you think or act and find ways to change them (if you want to).
How can counselling help me?
How can counselling help me?
A counsellor is someone trained to listen and help you decide what you want to do about the issues in your life.
They will:
- Listen actively without judgement.
- Help you find your own answers, reflect and explore your feelings safely.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- They will not give advice or tell you what to do or meet socially.
All counsellors are qualified and experienced with ongoing professional development & receive clinical supervision.
We currently offer:
-
One to One Low cost or Private counselling with Qualified Counsellors from £10 – £40 per session (depending on your salary)
-
We also work with the NHS Staffordshire Wellbeing Service to provide up to six sessions of counselling for free. Please click here for more information.
We welcome referrals from community, voluntary, statutory, private sectors and other agencies.

Assessments are usually conducted on Mondays or Thursdays
For counselling to be beneficial it is important to attend regular weekly appointments. If you are unable to attend an arranged appointment it is essential that you give us as much notice as possible. A message can be left at any time on our voicemail facility. If you fail to cancel in good time you may lose that session and if you miss two appointments without contacting us we will assume that you don’t wish to continue with the sessions.

Our Support Groups
Support groups are where people share their own experiences to help each other. How much you speak and how you connect is up to you. If you really don’t want to share how you are feeling, it might not be the right time for you, there’s no pressure from the group, and they will understand.
Zoom Peer Support Groups
“The support was mutual. When I was going through a low patch, I often received reassurance and kind words.”
“It’s not always about getting or giving advice. It’s also about having a safe space to get things off our chest and occasionally sharing a laugh about it all!”
“Both quantitative and qualitative evidence indicate that peer support lowers the overall cost of mental health services by reducing re-hospitalization rates and days spent in inpatient services… Peer support improves quality of life, increases and improves engagement with services, and increases whole health and self-management.”
MHA, “Evidence for Peer Support” May 2018
We are delivering Peer Support Sessions over Zoom, funded by Burton on Trent Consolidated Charities for 6 months. This will be hosted by Sukhbinder and Alex, Community Help Associates. Sukhbinder has an OCN qualification in running recovery based workshops and has extensive experience in facilitating peer support groups.
Once a week, over Zoom, up to 8 people will be able to share their experiences of what is helping them with their mental health recovery. The format will open ended so that everyone has a chance to speak and learn new tips and ideas. We will kick off sessions in May 2021, on Thursday evenings 6pm – 8 pm

Ecotherapy Group
Ecotherapy is a formal type of therapeutic treatment that involves doing outdoor activities in nature. There isn’t one single definition of Ecotherapy, but it is often used to describe a regular, structured activity that:
-
Is led by trained professionals (sometimes therapists), who are there to support you.
-
Focuses on doing an activity, rather than on your health directly.
-
Takes place in a green environment.
-
Is related to exploring and appreciating the natural world.
-
Involves spending time with other people, although you can always choose to interact at your own pace.

Mindfulness and Relaxation Class
Relaxation doesn’t have to take up lots of your time – just stepping away from something stressful for a few minutes or taking time away from your normal routines and thoughts can give you enough space and distance to feel calmer.
Exploring relaxation can help you look after your wellbeing when you’re feeling stressed or busy.
