Rotherham & Barnsley Mind is an independent local provider of high-quality mental health services in Rotherham, Barnsley and its surrounding areas. We aim to empower individuals to start on the pathway to recovery and that their condition should never define the person. Rotherham & Barnsley Mind aims to be inclusive and accessible. We offer a variety of services, including one-to-one counselling, group sessions, support for young people, training and services for employers.

Counselling
Please note that until further notice, R B Mind will be delivering telephone and video counselling only. This is to protect you, our staff and volunteers.
If you are being affected by issues or concerns that are stopping you from enjoying life or reaching your full potential, then our counselling services could help.
Counselling offers a safe, non-judgemental space to explore any concerns that may be affecting you in your life and to work out and understand for yourself what the issues are that are impacting your mental wellbeing.
Person-centred counselling at R B Mind is at the core of what we offer. We are here to listen and support you in gaining a greater understanding of any issues and how you might move past them. We will readily sit alongside you and support you as you make any necessary changes in your life.
Sometimes it is difficult to talk to friends, family, loved ones or colleagues. Family or friends can be part of the issue, or we don’t want to upset them with how we feel. Our counselling services provide you with a safe space to explore all these things with an experienced counsellor.
We have been offering counselling services and therapeutic support since 1977. We are the experts to turn to when you are struggling with your mental health. You don’t need a mental health diagnosis to access our counselling as long as you feel that you would benefit from therapeutic support. Our counsellors are all members of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and comply with the BACP Ethical Framework.
Access to all our counselling services requires you to meet with us first to complete an informal assessment; this will allow us to work with you and agree on the best way forward and how many sessions you are likely to need. Fully qualified members of the team conduct all assessments.
In order for us to provide you with the highest quality of service, we need to make a charge of £25 for initial assessments, and payment must be received in advance.
Costs
Our private counselling service allows you to access our bank of qualified counsellors quickly, and we are usually able to start your sessions within two weeks of referral. Our qualified counsellors have previously volunteered with R B Mind, so we can be confident that they offer a very high standard of therapeutic competence. Private sessions cost £45 per session and last 50 minutes. Evening appointments are available on set days.
Rotherham and Barnsley Mind no longer receives local authority funding and therefore cannot offer to counsel free of charge. We have recently introduced a low-cost counselling service as an affordable alternative to private counselling. Counselling at this rate is provided by a trainee or newly qualified volunteer counsellors working towards British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP) accreditation status.
Your referral will be screened by one of our clinical assessors, and you will be allocated accordingly to one of our trainee or volunteer counsellors based on your current presenting needs.
All our trainee volunteer counsellors work within the BACP Framework for Counselling Professions (2018) and are DBS checked. They are also required and committed to attend regular supervision provided by the clinical team at Rotherham and Barnsley Mind.
We rely on the advanced payment of fees by our clients to ensure counselling is kept affordable and accessible to all.
Evening sessions start at a minimum of £20 regardless of income, and we can offer both short term (6-10 sessions) and longer-term (10 -20 sessions) depending on what is suitable for you. The average wait for these sessions is usually around 3 months, though we can usually reduce this depending on your availability.
Costs per session:
£15 – Available for those whose income is under £20,000
£30 – Available for those whose income is above £20,000
£45 – Private Therapy available to all
Employee assistance programmes and employers are also welcome. Please contact us in confidence to discuss your requirements and quote.
