Mind Befriending Sir Gâr
Our befriending scheme offers support and companionship to people with mental health needs. We recruit, train and match volunteers with individuals who are socially isolated through their experience of mental ill-health. In a rural county like Carmarthenshire, people can also be geographically isolated.
Aims and objectives of Mind Befriending Sir Gâr
We aim to encourage people experiencing emotional or mental health problems towards a more fulfilling life through developing mutually beneficial friendships.
We aim to:
Alleviate the loneliness of people with mental health problems who are geographically isolated by helping them developing a wider social network. We also want to:
- Promote personal choice
- Increase self-respect
- Reduce stress
- Support existing personal skills and the development of new opportunities
- Prevent admissions and re-admissions to hospital by minimising the destabilising effects of mental illness
- Promote a more positive attitude to mental health in the community
The befriending scheme will:
- Provide regular and agreed on contact with a volunteer befriender
- Provide companionship and support
- Offer a listening ear, but not structured counselling
- Offer this service in an informal, non-judgmental and confidential manner, free to the service user
- Ensure regular reviews of the befriending relationship
- Mind Befriending Sir Gâr works within the Mind Quality Framework and uses the Quality
- Management in Mind (QMiM) demonstrates our commitment to quality assurance.
Twilight Sanctuary
What is The Twilight Sanctuary?
The Twilight Sanctuary is here to support people through their struggles and concerns, whatever they may be. It isn’t easy to always get the help you need, and sometimes it’s difficult to know where to go. We aim to help with that. If we can help talk you through your concerns, we will; if we cannot, we aim to signpost you to an organisation that can. We are here to talk you through your situation and do what we can to help you.
we cannot help you if you are feeling suicidal. If you have thoughts of self-harm or suicide, you need to attend A&E or MIU for the right support from the crisis teams.
Support is offered on a one to one basis. This can be over the phone or in person. We do offer a limited support on Facebook, though this depends on the situation and we would much prefer to support via phone or in person.
How do you access the service?
Ideally, contact the Twilight sanctuary via phone. We can have a brief chat about what is going on and gather some information to see the best way forward. Some people only want to talk on the phone, and we can support you this way if you wish. sometimes people need some ongoing support and contact us on a weekly basis. we can arrange a time for that call to take place, or simply contact us as and when needed.
If you decide that you would like to come in and speak to someone, we will go through some questions with you on the phone and then arrange a time – this is normally if convenient the same evening or when works for you. When you arrive, you will be welcomed by a member of staff. You’ll be shown to one of the rooms and chat with someone over a cuppa. There is no rush, and you can take your time. The staff member with you will talk you through everything step by step and listen to your concerns, discuss them with you and then see where we can help.
If it is felt that you require assistance from another organisation, we will make the referral or contact where we can with your consent or we will give you the details and follow up with you if you want us to.
